Reading Books

How can I navigate within a book?
There are many different ways to navigate within a book. The 4 main means are…
  • KeyStrokes
You can use the keys on your keyboard to page forward and backward. Space bar or "F" will take you one page forward, "B" will take you one page back.

  • Nav Buttons
Page + takes you one page forward. -Page takes you one page backward. If you want to fine tune your navigation, you can scroll forwards and backwards a line at a time using the -Line+ button.

  • Table of Contents
You can choose to have the Table of Contents displayed in the right hand control panel area of the Reader. Simply click on a chapter to move forward to that chapter.

  • Progress Bar
To the right of the main reading area is a Progress Bar. The Bar tracks your progress through the book as a whole. As well as displaying your position within the book, the Progress Bar allows you to jump through the book by clicking on the Bar.
Can I change the size of the text in the Reader?
When you open a book up in the Reader, you will see buttons in the right hand control panel area that allow you to choose the font size you find most comfortable for your reading experience.

Purchasing Books

How do I purchase a book?
Many of our books are available for purchase through a third party vendor. Simply click on the Buy Book button. Bookface.com does not sell books directly - we give experiences away for free!

Booknotes & Bookmarks

What is a booknote?
A booknote is a bookmark that contains an annotation. The booknotes are displayed in the control panel to the right of the Reader text panel.

How can I create a bookmark?
By clicking on a word in the text in the book you have open in the Reader, you highlight that word. You've just placed what we call a "hook" in the text. At this point, the hook is a simple bookmark. This hook is also the first step in creating a booknote.

How do I add an annotation to transform a bookmark into a booknote?
To add a notation to your bookmark, click the booknotes button in the control panel of the Reader to bring up a list of all of your hooks. You will see options for editing or deleting each hook. Choosing edit will allow you to add or edit notes for each hook. Choosing delete will obviously remove the hook from your booknote set for the book you are annotating. Be careful - once you have deleted a booknote, it cannot be recovered.

After you have added an annotation to your bookmark - making the bookmark a booknote - the first word of the hook will be underlined.

Where are my booknotes? Why did my booknotes disappear?
Booknotes are linked to both a book and a user name. Check to see if you are logged in under the same username you were logged in under when you created your booknotes.

Can someone else read my notes?
Currently all of your booknotes are private. In the future, we will allow you to make your notes public to allow your friends/colleagues/students to read them.

Search

What kinds of searches can I perform?
Many pages at our website contain a simple search box in the upper left-hand corner. This search box allows you to find books by keyword.

But perhaps you are looking for books more generally - you feel like finding a biography to read. Then you should use powersearch. You can go to powersearch by clicking the link in the top horizontal navigation or the link within the simple search box in the upper left-hand corner. Powersearch allows you to search by keyword, title, author name and actual text of a book. You can also search for and find articles and discussions about books.
There is also search functionality within our Reader itself. So, if you are reading Wuthering Heights at Bookface.com and want to evaluate the use of environment in the novel, you could enter "moor" into the search box (you haven't left the book Reader) and we will show you where to go in the book.

Community

How do I participate in a discussion?
Participating in our community discussions is easy. Our editors provide many links around our site to help you choose a discussion, or you can browse through our forums. Posting a message does require you to be a registered user of Bookface.com, and you will need to choose a signature name for your posts. That's it. We welcome your opinions and insight.

You can use the help available at our message boards for specific usage questions.

What is Coolboard?
Coolboard is a community building tool that allows us to offer cutting-edge technology to our users. By using Coolboard to power our message boards, we are able to focus on providing the best books and original content to our users while trusting in a third party vendor.
